LUMSA is a private Italian university and the second oldest university in Rome after Sapienza. LUMSA was founded by Luigia Tincani together with Cardinal Giuseppe Pizzardo, and on 26 October 1939, it received its canonical erection and civil recognition by the Italian State as higher education institute for nuns.

In 1989, it was reconstituted as Libera Università Maria SS. Assunta (LUMSA), a university for women and open to men shortly after. LUMSA grew into a multi-faculty institution that also offered degree programs and was one of the first Italian Universities to offer programs in Communication Science and Journalism within the Faculty of Arts. Law, politics, economics, and psychology were also added gradually to the portfolio.

At the European level, LUMSA gained recognition by the European Union as one of the best Italian universities for its effort to develop high-quality programs for the Erasmus project.
