Walking tour – The “Spina di Borgo”
Description
Only a hundred years ago, the area around St. Peter’s Church was completely different: where today you see tourists walking, there were once buildings, known as “Spina di Borgo”. The “Spina di Borgo” was a group of buildings, located within the Borgo district, bordered on the sides by two streets, Borgo Nuovo and Borgo Vecchio, and at the extremes by Piazza Pia and Piazza Rusticucci (today Piazza Pio XII). The urban structure had a triangular shape, with the tip pointing towards Castel Sant’Angelo, resembling the median strip of a Roman circus called “spina”, hence the name of the area. In the 1930s, Italy’s dictator Mussolini decided to demolish and raze this expanse of the neighborhood, clearing the way for the iconic boulevard we now know as Via della Conciliazione, and seamlessly uniting the St. Peter’s Church with Castel Sant’Angelo.
The walking tour will start at h.18.00 at Lumsa University – Via di Porta Castello, 44 and the appointment is at the info desk.
