Charlie Markillie

Charlie is a Principal Associate in the Competition, EU & Trade Group at Evershed Sutherland Leeds office. He holds qualifications in Hong Kong, England & Wales, and Ireland. In his role, Charlie offers guidance across a broad range of competition law matters, encompassing mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, commercial agreements, and trade practices. Charlie has worked with clients in a number of sectors, including chemicals, pharmaceuticals, financial services, food, media, mining and resources, rail, renewable energy, retail and water.
Recent work highlights include:
- Undertaking a strategic secondment with a major international airline, assuming the position of the airline’s Group Senior Compliance Counsel. During his tenure at the airline, Charlie provided counsel on antitrust, data protection, and bribery issues, overseeing a team of four individuals. Originally slated for a four-month duration, the secondment was extended to 20 months.
- Completing three separate secondments within the Asia Pacific Competition Team of a global bank.
- Offering advisory services to one of the world’s largest container shipping lines regarding merger control implications associated with a joint venture alongside a Chinese SOE in the marine services sector.
- Providing advice to the UK’s largest manufacturer of commercial catering equipment in relation to a UK Competition and Market’s Authority investigation into minimum advertised pricing.
- Offering guidance on numerous metal-neutral joint ventures within both the passenger and cargo aviation industries.
- Conducting a competition risk assurance exercise across all business units of the Hong Kong office of a global bank.
- Leading simulated dawn raids at client premises to evaluate their preparedness for potential investigations by competition authorities.
- Playing a key role in the development and customization of Eversheds Sutherland’s Competition Law Online Toolkit for clients with employees located in various countries across the globe.
